The primary and most obvious difference is that death either their own or someone else's means very little to them.
The window onto Viking culture leaves me kind of mentally sorting through dialogue and action that takes place, marking off the things that I think are similar or different from my own experience of life.
I like the way heroes and villains are handled in this series. Even the worst Viking villains are not going to yell for their Mommy when it comes time for their typically brutal punishment.
And the best heroes Ragnar can turn bloodily murderous at the drop of a hat. There is an unstated evolution taking place in Ragnar where he seems to sense that savagery is not an optimal way of life.
He seems to be slowly awakening to the novel idea that human life might have value, and this awakening potentially connects him to you and me and our own lives.
Ragnar's most attractive quality is not his faceted, piercing blue eyes, but his intellectual curiosity, which by necessity, always takes second place to his need to maintain dominance by destroying anything blocking his path.
Lagaertha, the ultimate combination of Nordic beauty and female warrior. Rollo, the ultimate male warrior, Ragnar's brother, who can't seem to get out of Ragnar's shadow and find a place for himself that suits his needs and ambitions.
And many more. I do want to raise one caveat, which is the fact that somehow I started watching Vikings at season 2.
I didn't realize this until halfway through season 4A, at which point I then went back and watched Season 1. Season 1 took a little time to really get its balance, which didn't bother me at all because I already knew where it was going.
But looking at some nasty critiques of the series later on, I realized that many of these critiques were coming from people who had watched a couple of episodes from season 1 and weren't patient enough to keep going with it.
So, my advice is if season 1 doesn't grab you right away, stick with it, and it will be worth it. Oh My Gosh! Top Contributor: Fantasy Books.
Vikings is a great show. The discs come in plastic snap cases. They play fine. Vikings is a great show, interesting story arc, colorful characters, and wonderful scenery.
If you like the series you will probably like The Last Kingdom One of the reasons is the doubling of The Vikings disc prices after season three.
Instead of releasing the entire fourth season in one plastic snap case they decided to split the season and release a volume one and a volume two so they could make twice as much money, like Outlander did when the season one discs were released.
I hate that type of price gouging so I stopped buying The Vikings after season three and refused to buy Outlander.
If you like getting the best bang for your buck I suggest buying something else instead of encouraging The Vikings and Outlander and other shows to price gouge.
Well done. The acting, the dialogue, even the manner of speech was spot on. The cast was pitch perfect, as were their costumes.
Whoever selected the largely unknown here is U. The scenery and sets gave the feeling you were there in the 9th century, not only in Norway, but also in England and France.
That the story was based on historical events, mythical or real, and the characters historical figures, added to the sense of authenticity.
It's the kind of production you can watch again and again. Some music magic moments required a leap of logic.
Like the old Westerns where a 6-shooter can fire dozens of shots without reloading, the Viking army would land with a couple hundred men, go into battle, have a thousand killed and have a thousand more in reserve.
And crossing the North Sea quickly, repeatedly and safely reminded me of why the Star Trek producers created the Transporter - to move the story along.
I understand and I forgive; there are always compromises involved in making a movie, especially when the story it tells is based, however loosely, on history.
I've watched all four seasons at least twice and am anxiously awaiting season 5. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.
One person found this helpful. Worth seeimg. Despite what you might read here, Vikings Season 3 on Blu-ray is of good quality. All the disks play..
Mine is the Canadian version. If you have watched this in the States than the Canadian History Channels 43 minute episodes will be short.
If you want the full uncut American version go to Amazon. Cheaper too! But the Canadian Blu-ray does have deleted scenes.
And the Blu-ray has some other extras. No audio commentary though. And the season is good as well. Season 3 will not leave you angry.
It is well written, unlike season 4 which has some Vikings acting like 21st Century PC persons. I will not give the whole season away because that isn't fair to people who have not seen it yet.
Would you like me to tell you the final score of a Hockey game before it started? Of course not. This season features the real life Viking raid on Paris.
And the detail is so historically accurate. I have seen the actual monk drawings of the 9th century Viking raid on Paris. The drawing shows boats all with 30 foot scaling ladders.
And this is what you will see in the episode "Pairs. But I would say the price of that season is worth it just for that one episode.
And he sacked London for two weeks. Hint: sometimes the dead may not be dead. Season 3 will not disappoint you. Report abuse.
I haven't had a chance to watch this particular set yet, but I did watch Season 3 as it aired on television. It may not be as wicked as seasons 1 or 2 however it is still extremely interesting to see the adaptation of the vikings conquest, particularly in Paris.
Travis Fimmel relishes in his role as Ragnar Lothbrok and is supported by many adept actors. Lastly, the acting was good for such a movie.
Watch it; you won't be disappointed. I didn't have the option to watch this dubbed into English, so I was stuck reading the sub-titles, but kept getting lost in the amazing filming of this project.
As someone who has worked in film, the cinematography of this is top shelf! Don't be fooled that its out of Russia.
It is better than Hollywood current production, no CGI fakeness, and fight scenes that look as real as you can get without being there in person.
The costumes and period correct props with exception of a few crossbows is on par with history and makes this historically accurate and fun to watch.
I didn't care about plot and story, historical pieces often don't have good stories, and this one was a good as any other.
The Viking correct traditions and such throughout the film were also a pleasure to see. Somebody who knew Vikings was involved with the production of this film.
Kudos to Russia. Perhaps the eventual replacement of Hollywood since our movies suck now. I agree with A from VA and that is why I gave it a 5.
It was very accurate in it's portrayal of the period. Vikings, Rus, the Church all handled very well. The garb, armor and weapons were spot on.
If you like the TV show Vikings, give this one a try. The acting, the stunts, the art direction is superb. The lead actor is quite good.
Good story too. I watched this on Amazon Prime. The trailer was terrible, I almost didn't watch the movie. The trailer was dubbed hate that but the movie is subtitled.
Everything was done well. Pay attention to who is who at the beginning, it's a little confusing who is allied with whom. Vlad's conversion to Christianity is slow and I wish the movie had explained a little better what grace is, Vlad was confused by it and Jesus is never explained.
This may have been on purpose so that the movie is not overtly Christian. But that makes it look like the people are just following the next fad, and many today are the same, you never know who really believes and who doesn't.
However their is a stark contrast between the way they lived before and after Christianity. One of Vlad's soldiers says men don't change.
He's right, only Jesus can change a person, and Vlad proves it by offering his neck to his soldier's blade, he will not fight anymore.

Historically, the reason why Odin and Thor are a joke and Christ is now king of these former pagan nations, is because they converted to Christianity.
This might be an uncomfortable historical fact to people who hate God, but it happened and the movie captures this quite well.
And unlike other religions, Christianity spread through these nations, not at the end of a sword like many religions did and do today , but because of the truth of the message of Christ.
As far as accuracy, the costumes are better than anything Hollywood produces today, and the plot follows the history of Vladimir of Novgorod quite well.
Great movie about a subject that starkly contrasts the crap coming out of Hollywood today. Visually-fantastic epic, but maybe not what I expected.
Vladamir the Great is known for advancing the fortunes of the Kievan Rus, unifying them under Christianity, and sending his Vikings to Constantinople to form the Varangian Guard, but ever since his own time he has struggled with an image problem.
By all accounts, he was not a very nice guy, but for the sake of his positive contributions to his people who formed the nations of Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus and to his Church, historians have tried to make his story a redemptive one.
His worst atrocities are mercifully off-camera though some are acknowledged and sometimes chocked up to being hopped-up on berserker potion.
Nonetheless, there is a lot of stumbling and mumbling as the hero tries to figure out the meaning of life. I have been hyped to see this movie since I first saw the preview on YouTube a few years ago, but it was made in Russia and unavailable until it recently showed up on Amazon Prime.
The costumes and props are excellent, the action and stunts very good, the cinematography had numerous moments of splendor; but the nationalistic and religious themes in the film give it a "John Wayne movie" quality, though, and while the English overdubbing is as good as it can be, the voices and translations give it that "kung fu movie" effect.
Last criticism: the Vikings themselves are often downplayed, waiting around while their Rus cousins sort things out.
Favorite easter egg: The narrator is Svienald, the historical character who in The Russian Primary Chronicle tells Vladamir's father to not go home by river.
Sviatoslav may have lived if he had listened that doesn't make it into the movie so it's not a spoiler.
Fans of epics, medieval movies, Byzantium, Russian, Slavik, or Viking history will probably want to check this film out.
For purely Viking fans, though, curb your enthusiasm. Do not listen to the negative reviews; those are the ones that either hate history, hate the message of the movie which is historical , or love nothing but nudity, gore, and unrealistic stories.
For everyone else, this movie did a wonderful job of depicting the cultures and time period. The action was very real to what would have taken place.
Of course, there were a couple of embellishments, but that is almost always the case for dramatized historical movies.
There were only two disappointments: 1. Hollyweird refuses to make this type of movie with this type of message because they prefer to produce falsehoods like "Kingdom of Heaven.
I wanted more when it was done. I wish this were a series of movies. Moreover, this was translated, so no reading the subtitles the entire time.
Lastly, the acting was good for such a movie. Watch it; you won't be disappointed. I didn't have the option to watch this dubbed into English, so I was stuck reading the sub-titles, but kept getting lost in the amazing filming of this project.
