Statt Erklärungen werden uns prinzipiell einfach nur ein Hightech-Computer und ein paar schnell vorbeizischende Zahlen, viel glänzendes Metall und eine Portion sprühender Funken gezeigt.
Der dümmliche Dicke Ben, für den im Leben doch eigentlich nur die Liebe seiner Frau zählt, ist der einzige, der unter seiner Superhelden-Existenz leidet.
Die Frage danach, warum die Verwandlung des hässlichen Entleins im Gegensatz zu der seiner attraktiven Mitstreiter nicht dem Willen unterworfen, sondern permanent ist, wird wie soviel Wissenswertes nie beantwortet.
Fazit: Ein Actionfilm ohne viel Action, dafür aber voller peinlichem Kitsch. Jurybegründung: eroberten die Marvell-Comics mit den Abenteuern der fantastischen Vier die Welt.
Es war eine Frage der Zeit aber auch der tricktechnischen Möglichkeiten , bis jemand diese Geschichten verfilmen würde. Es gilt, wie immer in Comics, einen bösen Feind zu bezwingen, der in diesem Fall ebenfalls von der Strahlung getroffen wurde und dies nutzt, um die fantastischen Vier zu besiegen.
Nach einem etwas langsamen und mühsamen Anfang kommt die Handlung dann doch noch ins Rollen und bekommt Tempo. Der Film ist handwerklich und technisch solide gemacht und unterhaltsam, wenn auch nicht atemberaubend spannend.
Man kennt das aus anderen Comic-Verfilmungen. Aber immerhin gibt es einige amüsante Momente, so in der Szene, als der Gummimann mit langem Arm direkt von der Toilette in den Vorratsschrank greift, um sich eine Rolle Klopapier zu holen.
Comic City bleibt eine Boomtown, wie der jüngste Neuzugang beweist. Das entspricht dem Ton des Comics, der sich auf den Fun-Faktor von Superkräften konzentriert, der seine Helden ohne geheime Zweitidentitäten in ein ganz alltägliches Umfeld platziert.
Der Plot verzichtet auf komplizierte Handlungsschlingen, begleitet geradlinig die Veränderung des Quartetts von Normalbürgern zu populären Superhelden.
Das kosmische Feldexperiment endet abrupt, als das Naturphänomen die Besatzung überrascht und die Strahlung den genetischen Code verändert.
Zurück auf der Erde lernen die Mutanten ihre neuen Kräfte, Spiegel ihrer Persönlichkeiten, kennen und am Ende damit auch in Koalition umzugehen.
