Yet if the zombies are defined by frantic agitation, the show itself stands out from the pack thanks to a pensive, almost dreamlike economy.

It is a relatively minimalist series, which favours tension and suspense over character development or even dialogue. There were several moments in Black Summer where I was cuddled up under my blanket, a little bit terrified.

For me, this makes it a must watch. Although far from being the best of the genre, Black Summer is the zombie apocalypse series I've most enjoyed since the first season of The Walking Dead.

An entertaining, exciting and tense, introduction to what I hope will become a brilliant zombie series. If you're a fan of the zombie subgenre, Black Summer should be right in your wheelhouse.

It's a bleak, fast-paced action drama heavy on the action and light on the personal drama. The stiff acting in Black Summer is also a broad issue throughout the series, accentuated by the bad scripting and ineffective plotting.
