They meet Carlos, a Spaniard, traveling with Abby, a young American. Carlos keeps close to Jessie, and when Roy is left behind and waits a day for the next train so he can catch up, Jessie and Carlos take a trip into the dead of winter to photograph a ruined church.

Carlos may be running drugs, so, later, when Roy catches up and introduces Jessie to his new pal, an English speaking Russian narcotics detective, he's the last person Jessie wants to see.

Will the Siberian desolation be their undoing? Brad Anderson is probably the best unknown director working today. He's the independent Christopher Nolan, often making character-driven, psychologically complex flicks that transcend the trappings of their respective genres.

In the past he has successfully combined elements from time-travel thrillers and romantic comedies in 's "Happy Accidents", delivered a taut "Shining"-esque thriller in 's "Session 9" and then provided a stirring Hitchcock homage with 's "The Machinist" which also featured a gonzo performance from Christian Bale.

With "Transsiberian" Anderson attempts to breath life back into the often forgotten train-based thriller.

Like those three earlier films, "Transsiberian" was made on the cheap, yet still manages to feature great camera-work and well known faces headlining the cast.

In terms of the logistics of the location shooting in Lithuania doubling as Siberia , this arrives as Anderson's most accomplished film from a technical standpoint.

The story starts off with an American couple a goofy Woody Harrelson and a criminally underrated Emily Mortimer returning from missionary work in China by route of the famous Transsiberian railroad.

Once on board the train, they befriend a young couple Kata Mara and Eduardo Noriega who claim to be student-teachers returning from Japan but might be hiding something sinister.

The screenplay does a good job of building up to "something" and developing the characters, especially Mortimer's Jessie, delving into her past with expository dialog that makes you care about where these characters are headed and think deeply about their motives.

Without giving away too much of the film, entanglements ensue as a drug smuggling operation comes to light, and in steps Ben Kingsley excellent as a Russian bruiser as a narcotics detective with a special interest in the case.

There is a point, however, where pardon the pun the screenplay derails, and despite some unexpected twists, there never seems to be that big payoff.

The film keeps the viewer on their toes with a bizarre turn of events at an abandoned church and a shockingly grim torture scene, but the psychological ramifications of these events are never probed as deeply as they could've been.

The seductively cute Mortimer gives a nervy, complex, and excellent performance as Jessie, keeping the viewer invested in her character and what could happen to her even as the screenplay goes all over the map with her development.

Woody Harrelson's performance is more of a conundrum as he seems to be playing a book-smart version of his moronic character from "Cheers".

He makes you laugh during some of the more ridiculous scenes as the plot holes get deeper, and whether that was intentional or not to break the tension or gloss over the leaps of logic is never clear.

Though the screenplay initially gives us characters that feel like real people, the mechanics of the convoluted plot spoil the potential of that development.

However, the film still offers up an exotic locale, solid direction, and interesting performances, which makes it easy to recommend.

View All Critic Reviews Jan 20, A very suspenseful thriller, Transsiberian slowly builds tension up and never slows down, thanks largely to wonderful performances from Emily Mortimer, Eduardo Noriega, and Ben Kingsley.

Mortimer gives an especially impressive performance as the protagonist thrust into horrific circumstances on a cross-country train ride.

The only problem I had with it was that Emily Mortimer's character can become frustrating at times because she refuses to tell the truth, which would quickly and cleanly solve the film's conflict.

This is forgivable though given the quality of the rest of the movie, and that is no reason why you shouldn't watch this.

Transsiberian is a very exciting thriller that's better than most and contains a number of great performances that only improve it further.

Joey S Super Reviewer. Aug 05, Grinko: In Russia, we have expression. He may be most remembered for The Machinist when all is said and done, but this may be his best film.

Elements of some Hitchcock thrillers come into play in this railway thriller. The film starts out slow, building up with character development and the start of a new friendship.

We don't really have a sense of what's going to happen next, but when something does happen, the film builds in intensity and tension. Everything Anderson was trying to accomplish with a slow start ends up working perfectly as the story comes full circle.

A married couple, Ray and Jesse, are traveling on the Trans-Siberian Railway when they meet another couple. The four hit it off and become vacation buddies.

When Jesse is left at one of the stops the other three get off to wait for him. That's when everything changes and the film becomes a thriller.

When Ray and Jesse are reunited on the train, a new character comes into their lives. He is Grinko, a Russian detective.

Besides beautiful landscape and a great thriller setting, Transsiberian is held up high by a great cast. The two couples becoming friends sort of feels like the couples from A Perfect Getaway.

The actors play their characters beautifully and really make it hard to get a sense of what will happen next. The movie doesn't really have anything holding it back.

Roy kills him. They escape with the train because Roy, a railway enthusiast, knows how to operate it. The train slows down and Grinko and Kolzak re-board the train.

When they question Jessie again about Carlos' whereabouts, holding her and Roy at gunpoint, Jessie admits she killed Carlos.

Kolzak does not believe her, but at that moment, the train collides with a troop-carrying train. With the army on the way, Grinko shoots Kolzak to maintain his cover.

The couple are arrested, while Grinko escapes. In Moscow, U. Through a photograph Jessie took of Grinko and his associates, the officials believe they can shut down the drug operation.

They reveal Carlos' criminal history and believe Abby just got mixed up with the wrong crowd. When signing statements, Jessie does not confess she killed Carlos, although Roy may have heard her admit to this.

Touring Moscow, Jessie insists on talking to Abby in the hospital, although their conversation is not heard in the film.

The final scene shows Abby finding Carlos' body. She takes a fortune in stolen money from his jacket. The film received positive reviews from critics.

The site's critical consensus states that "Traditional in form yet effective in execution, this taut thriller updates the 'danger on a train' scenario with atmospheric sense.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times praised the film, saying it builds "true fear and suspense". From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
